Core Standards
Core standards are a guide to the performance targets of any Watch group and a measure of the success in meeting
them. They set out the ideal actions of the co-ordinator and members. The relative
importance of the various actions will vary with the Watch environment over time. They are listed
below in no particular order. The co-ordinator should -
Encourage members to use the Service Centre and Crimestoppers

Modern policing is based on information. Watch members are the ‘eyes
and ears’ of the police. Don’t swither and dither ! But the ‘Crime in Progress’ number is still 999 !
Obtain and pass local crime reports to members + seasonal notices
(lights out, Xmas, summer holidays, etc) + reminders of basic precautions + leaflets promoting or explaining NW.
Create Newsletters. Information leaflets can be obtained from the
police website, GNWA, Crimestoppers, etc.
Arrange
meetings with members as appropriate Welcome new residents
Ensure that all members have contact details of the co-ordinator/deputy
Be
aware of vulnerable residents and contact their carers where appropriate.
Collect an annual £1 voluntary donation from each member,
to cover the cost of running the watch.
Replace
broken signs (ordering info on website).
Bring
local problems to the attention of the community PC or Warden, Community Council, Local Authority community development department,
NW association
Promote NW whenever possible.
Communicate
with GNWA and local association as appropriate Report faulty
street lights, blocked drains, etc
Understand the need for
Core Standards to foster consistency
Maintain contact with
local associations, reporting successes or failures and requesting support when needed
Encourage community spirit
Encourage communication with any age group.
